Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a 158-acre cultural destination that seamlessly blends art, horticulture, and nature. The inception of Meijer Gardens was driven by the vision of Frederik Meijer, founder of the Meijer grocery chain, and his wife, Lena. In the early 1980s, the West Michigan Horticultural Society sought to establish a botanical garden and conservatory. By 1991, the Meijers donated 70.7 acres of land, originally intended for a new superstore, to support this endeavor. Their generosity extended beyond land; they also contributed significant financial resources and their personal sculpture collection.

At the heart of the Gardens is the Lena Meijer Conservatory, Michigan's largest tropical conservatory. This five-story, 15,000-square-foot glass structure houses a diverse array of tropical plants, including palms, orchids, and bromeliads. Adjacent to the conservatory are several themed indoor gardens. The Earl and Donnalee Holton Victorian Garden showcases 19th-century horticultural practices with period-appropriate plants and furnishings. The Kenneth E. One of the most iconic pieces is "The American Horse" by Nina Akamu, a 24-foot-tall bronze sculpture inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's uncompleted equestrian statue.

In addition to its permanent collection, Meijer Gardens hosts rotating exhibitions and seasonal events. "Butterflies Are Blooming," held annually from March through April, is one of the largest temporary butterfly exhibits in the nation, featuring thousands of tropical butterflies in the conservatory. During the holiday season, "Christmas and Holiday Traditions" showcases festive displays from over 40 cultures, celebrating the diversity of global traditions.

The Gardens also offer educational programs for all ages, including workshops, lectures, and guided tours. These programs aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of both art and nature. The facility is fully accessible, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the diverse offerings.

In recent years, Meijer Gardens has continued to expand and innovate. A significant development was the opening of a new 69,000-square-foot Welcome Center in 2021, designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. This expansion includes additional exhibition spaces and a large relief sculpture by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, enhancing the visitor experience and accommodating the growing number of guests.
